When choosing a song, I wanted to try to pick an instrumental piece. This is because I am learning that I enjoy being able to hear all of the unique sounds of new instruments we learn about. With this in mind I began to try to find instrumental pieces that used one or two instruments so I could really focus on the sound the instrument makes. I ended up coming across an an instrument called a shakuhachi, which is a Japanese flute made of bamboo. I was intrigued by the shakuhachi because of the very mystical sounding music it makes. After listening to a few pieces I not only realized that slower paced pieces really exemplify the mystical feel of the shakuhachi, but I also discovered an artist named Rachel Radish, who is a shakuhachi and flute player and teacher. The specific piece I chose to share is called “Again the Stars“, and it was originally created by two other artists. Even though the piece was originally played  by two other people, Radish is a very skilled musician and is able to demonstrate the interesting and what I think is a fascinating sound of the shakuhachi.
