I decided to select a song from the album that we had been listening to in class with the first two examples. This album is called “Rhythms of Life, Music of Wisdom: Akan Music from Ghana,” and this specific song is called “Adzewa.” This piece is polyrhythmic, as predicted, and includes instruments like drums, bells, and shakers. Each instrument is playing their own individual pattern, but combined together, creates this piece of music that is textured and more complex. There is also a call and response dynamic in this piece, with a single vocalist calling and a chorus of singers responding. The chorus is pretty repetitive. This piece of music seems like it would be something you could find people dancing along to. I chose this song because I was curious about the other songs from the album that we had been listening to in class, and I found this particular song upbeat and fun to listen to, and I was able to make a connection with the instruments in this piece after having played our own polyrhythmic piece in class.
