A White Rainbow, also known as Bo Yavo Haboker, is a Jewish originated piece by Yosef Hader. Although it is in Hebrew and is sung by Jewish people, it is a secular song. This performance of the piece by the 2019 WSMA State Honors Treble Choir incorporates a cultural dance originating from the Jewish culture, which uses typical Jewish dance moves. When I learned this piece, we practiced using different vocal tones for the multitude of different pieces we sang in this concert, which ranged from typical European madrigal tone to nasally, forward placed African tone. This piece was somewhere in the middle, as it wasn’t quite as proper as western music, but not as nasally as the Indian music we’ve listened to. I’d say that the placement we aimed for was about in the middle of the mouth with a nasal overtone. This song also has different tempo sections, with slower, more intimate verses with no dance and the livelier chorus section where the dancing and drumming come in. I chose this example because I performed it(Daphne Johnson is in it too!), and I always love to share Honors Choir performances.
