This week, my song share pick is A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal (Noble Maiden Fair), written by Patrick Doyle, a renowned musical composer from Uddingston, Scotland, for the soundtrack of the 2012 Disney Pixar film Brave. When listening to the song, one would instantly pick up on the relaxing, if not somber, timbre of the piece that is formed through a slow, lullaby-like tempo, as well as the beautifully light playing of the violin and harp that accompanies the melodic singing of Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) and a young Princess Merida (Peigi Barker).

The song, sung during an emotional flashback in the film, is composed of Scottish Gaelic lyrics that depict the story of a young girl who calls lovingly for the aid of the sun and moon, supposedly her mother and father, to help her grow into a fair, noble maiden. The story tells of how, once this goal is achieved, the girl’s relationship with the sun and moon begins to fade, but how, despite this, the celestial beings always watch over her, patiently waiting until the day “her loveliness” joins them in the stars.

I chose A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal for my song share piece this week as I absolutely love the movie Brave, not only because of its incredible depictions of Scottish culture but also for its stunning and well-composed soundtrack. For the nearly thirteen years that I have listened to A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal, it has never ceased to give me goosebumps and a feeling of serenity, which is what inspired me to learn more about its story and musical elements for this week’s song share assignment.
