Jota is a folk dance with music that dates back to the kingdom of Aragon, located in modern day Spain. Jota is dated back to the seventeenth century. This music is still performed in Spain today. The purpose of the song is for dance and entertainment. I looked up different genres on Google in Spain, discovered Jota, and looked it up on Youtube. The instruments within the music played are filled with multiple chordophones, including the guitar, the lute, and the bandurria. In addition, hand clappers contribute to the rhythm within the song. The guitars and the lutes in the song are played using the same notes and pitch throughout the song, while the range of the guitar/lutes are minimal. The guitars and lutes contribute to the rhythm by creating a timeline that the rest of the instruments can follow. Also, the tempo and dynamics increase throughout the song (from slow to very fast). The bandurria is responsible for the melody; the contour increases in pitch throughout the song. The scale is ascending. The melody is what allows the dancers to use the clapper percussion instrument. The dancers contain a handle clapper percussion instrument. These instruments follow the melody, but they create a rhythm at the same time. This rhythm starts slower than walking tempo, then quickly gets faster, and then goes back to that pace. Furthermore, the vocalists in the music sing a harmonized chorus in certain parts of the song. Lastly, everything played is repeated throughout the song. I chose this piece because I wanted to a folk music that is related to a certain of form of dance.
