This is a traditional Takht Ensemble played by the Michigan Arab Orchestra and it has many similar qualities to the Takht Ensemble we listened to in class. It features instruments common in this tradition, such as the oud, violin, bamboo flute, and a few percussive instruments/drums. It has a structure of solo and ensemble sections, with solos from the oud, bamboo flute, and violin interspersed between whole ensemble sections. I especially liked the the violin section and its call and response nature. I thought it was a really cool feature to have the violin play a section of the melody and hear the whole ensemble repeat it back. I am beginning to really like this music tradition; it has some similarities to some Western music that I like, what with its orchestral setting, but it brings in a super unique and enticing sound with the half tones and scales that they use. It makes the music seem intriguing and almost mysterious in a way and I’ve really been enjoying it.
