This is a piece known as ‘running water’ or ‘flowing water’ and it feature a female performer playing the Chinese instrument the guqin, or ancient zither. The original piece has a great deal of history to it and it was divided into many different musical scores, one that this woman is performing. This piece shows the vast potential that the guqin has, as it goes from beautifully drawn out slow sections, to incredibly quick paced runs. I think the technique needed for this instrument is fascinating because the musician is able to make so many different sounds at once with only the one instrument. For example in the middle of the piece, she begins the faster section with intense runs with her right hand and slides her left hand along the strings to get two very distinct sounds: very fast changing, punchy, notes, and long drawn out slides down the fret. Overall I really liked the contrast between the slower and quicker paced sections in this song and enjoyed watching it performed as well.
