For our first song share assignment, I chose He Me Lo No Lilo from the movie Lilo and Stitch. This song was written by Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu. The literal translation of the song title means “song for the lost” which is fitting for this movie as it goes along the journey of Lilo, a lonely girl, and her adopted pet “dog”, Stitch. The song was written as a traditional Hawaiian dance song and adopted by Disney. The movie portrays hula dancers practicing which are quite similar to the ones that we saw in the documentary about hula dancing in class. This connection was interesting to see because while rewatching cartoon hula dancers practice, I also had a vision of the real thing in my head. My family members and I are huge Disney fans and so I quickly looked up this song, hoping it would fit into the category we are working with and I think it does quite well. I particularly love how upbeat and exciting this song is. It really portrays a “feel-good” mood that when listening makes you want to get up and dance. Behind the voices are instruments, mainly idiophones and membranophones, that are working with the voices. I also really like the key change, heard about half way through the song, which enhances the “feel good” aspect of the song. The voices that harmonize make me want to just smile when listening to this song! I am a big lover of all things Disney which could easily explain why I love this song as much as I do.
