The song that I chose is a traditional song played in Papua New Guinea typically at celebrations and events with dancers, costumes, and gifts. In the video, you can see six men playing what seem to be wooden tubes of different lengths in harmony with each other. Without the video, it would be hard to figure out how many people are playing at one time. The music is light and joyful even though it is just one instrument without any vocal accompaniment. The performers are all playing similar instruments but in different ways so that they can create new rhythms and melodies. I chose this song because it reminded me of something we might hear in today’s music but I also found it was impossible to not smile while listening.
