This band is called the Jalikunda African Drums and they are from Western Africa. This is a drum performance played at the Montserrat African Music Festival, played to entertain an audience. I found this recording on YouTube, and I chose it because I thought the way this band played was very impressive. They are very talented, and I thought it would be interesting to write about them. This band is strictly made up of five drummers (percussion instruments). The tempo of this performance is at a fast jogging pace and the contour remains consistent, in which they play short and quick notes. The four lead drummers perform their pieces off of sound rather than being composed, and I notice that they tend to rotate roles throughout the song. One of the drummers will begin to lead and improvise while the three other main drummers continue to keep the main rhythm of the piece, which they all rotate to the lead drummer throughout the duration. In addition, there is one drummer with five drums and is played with two sticks, and he plays a steady rhythm that is slower than the four main drummers. This drummer keeps the heartbeat of the piece, which sets a timeline for the lead drummers to follow. It serves an ostinato.
