One thing that really stood out to me in this song was the steel guitar. When looking into the background of the guitar I discovered that a man by the name of Joseph Kekuku created it. He discovered, after a lot of attempts, that depressing the guitar strings with metal gave a light and airy feeling which is now connected with the steel guitar. When listening to the performer’s voice I noticed that there are certain words that he will lengthen compared to other words. I also noticed that his pitch was deeper at the start of each line in the stanza and then it got higher. This would repeat throughout the song.
I choose this song because it reminds me of the beach. Sitting on the beach with the sounds of waves crashing is my happy place, especially when it is 15 degrees outside here in Wisconsin. This recording was discovered on the Smithsonian Folkways website, however, since it was not the full recording it was discovered again on YouTube.
