Past Life Melodies is an Australian aboriginal song written by Sarah Hopkins for a cappella choir. This piece includes Australian singing techniques such as open-throated chant singing, vocal drones and harmonic overtones, all of which are not normally seen in a choral piece. The main aspect of this piece is a hypnotic repetitive pattern overlaid by overtone singing, which is accented by the 11-part score. There is an optional didjeridu part which this choir did not use. This piece is unique because while it has aspects of native Australian music, it is written for a contemporary audience performed by a choir, which is not typical for this style of music. I picked this piece because I performed it in WSMA State Honors Choir in 2018, which is the video I have attached. Start at 18:20, end at 23:30.
