I found this song when exploring YouTube. This video is titled Qanun Taqasim, which doesn’t appear to be the title of the piece, but a style of music that this group is performing, as well as the main instrument (Qanun). Taqasim is a mostly improvised performance with a header that the song returns back too. The group that is performing this is the Michigan Arab Orchestra Takht Ensemble. They were established in April 2010 and include musicians from the greater Detroit community. They are known for performing classical and contemporary Arab music. I choose this piece because of its use of the ‘oud, qanun, and voice (especially for the Qanun improvised solo) and how it mixes with violin, bass, and percussion.
