(Somewhere) Over The Rainbow was originally sung by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz. The most popular cover of this song, sung by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, has a very strong Hawaiian feel to it. He sings solo while playing the ukelele, which is what really give it the Hawaiian/Polynesian feel. The original cover of the song was recorded in one take at 3 o’clock in the morning. It topped the top 50 in charts across the world, and Israel’s Album, Ka ʻAnoʻi, sold millions of copies worldwide. He unfortunately passed away in June of 1997 at 38 years old. I chose this example because I’ve heard it dozens of times before and is one of a few songs I think of when I hear Hawai’i. When I visited Hawa’ii in 2024, I saw more rainbows than I could count which is why this song always comes back to me. And in 2020, it was added to the library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
