I chose the song “Hele On To Kauai” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. It immediately caught my attention when I was looking on YouTube because my family takes a trip to the island of Kauai every summer. The song is about missing Kauai and realizing that there is no better place than home. I have been to many of the places he mentions, like Hanalei Bay and the Wailua River Valley, which he sings about growing up and playing in. He also sings about how the people who live there “know they got it all” and that he misses the simple way of life. I can hear the ukulele throughout the song and his soft tone of voice. The dynamics stay mostly soft, and the tempo is slow throughout the song, which gives it a calm, peaceful feeling. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole is also known for his famous ukulele recording of the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” which I found interesting.
