“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” is a version of the classic song performed by Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, often known simply as “IZ.” His version gives the well known song a distinctive sound through his vocals and simple ‘ukulele accompaniment. Kamakawiwo’ole recorded his version during a late night recording session in Honolulu in 1988, completing the performance in a single take. The recording was later included on his 1993 solo album Facing Future, which became one of the most successful Hawaiian albums of all time.

Musically, I find the simplicity of the song especially meaningful. Rather than using many instruments, the recording focuses primarily on Kamakawiwo’ole’s voice and ‘ukulele, creating a peaceful and emotional sound. It reminds me of the beauty of the islands and the special place Hawai’i holds in my family’s heart. I chose this song because it has a special connection to my family, as Hawai’i has held an important place in our hearts after the passing of my grandmother. This song always reminds me of her, and I thought others would enjoy hearing it. Learning more about the story behind the song has given me an even greater appreciation for a song that already means so much to my family.
