I chose “Ka Waiata Ki A Maria,” a Māori waiata from New Zealand. The song was composed by Māori composer Richard Puanaki in the 1980s and is a Catholic hymn honoring Mary. It is sung in the Māori language and is also used at Māori cultural gatherings. The song has a calm and peaceful sound, with vocals accompanied by acoustic guitar and light percussion. The singers use harmony throughout the song. The melody is fairly simple and repetitive, which gives the song a more gentle quality. I chose this song because I liked the sound of the language and the combination of the vocals and guitar. I also found it interesting that the song combines Māori cultural traditions with Christian religious traditions.
