I stumbled across this song and new immediately that it was the song for me to share. Aloha ‘Oe was a farewell song written by Princess Liliʻuokalani, the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This song was written as a farewell and has since become somewhat of a cultural symbol in Hawaii. Though rumored to be written about an embrace Princess Liliʻuokalani shared with a Colonel, a much more powerful message has been carried through this piece. Not long after it was written, Hawaii lost its independence. An entire nation was forced to say farewell to their culture and home. This song is melodically beautiful, with the sense of pain and sadness looming over the music in a powerful way. You can feel the heartbreak that is present when listening, with the voices staying fairly soft throughout the entire piece. The song really moves you and allows you to feel the longing that Liliʻuokalani felt when writing.
