The song Mueve la Cintura Mulato from the album Flor de Amor was released by Omara Pertuondo in 2004. Pertuondo is a Cuban singer and dancer who has been present in the performance industry since she was a child, winning many awards and honors for her skills. Though she has produced countless pieces of music, I chose Mueve la Cintura Mulato because of how closely it resembled the example Soneras Son that we listened to in class, while still featuring a female vocalist. Most prevalently, there are two voices in singing in harmony on a repetitive lyrical line that speaks to the pride that comes with one’s ancestry, specifically her own mix of European and African ancestry called Mulatto. The text is exemplified by the upbeat, dance-oriented tempo and the driving reverse clave rhythm. The instrumentation is also very similar, featuring guitar, claves, shakers, trumpet, and some form of drums. The form of this piece also resembles the example, with a catchy melody that repeats over and over again, sometimes alternating with developments.
