“Ya Rayah” is from the world of Arabic music. It was written and performed by the Algerian singer and songwriter Dahmane El Harrachi (Amrani Abderrahmane) in the 1970s. The song’s title, “Ya Rayah,” translates to “O Traveler” in Arabic. It features many instruments we mentioned in class including the Oud and the Darbuka, as well as other classics like the violin and the flute. I chose “Ya Rayah” because it really captures the notion and sound of what I think of when I hear Arabic music. The song’s melancholic melody and depth also make it a moving piece for me.
