Hymn to Osiris – The Ancient Egyptian Harp… – YouTube
The song Hymn to Osiris by Michael Levy is performed on the archaic Ugandan Adungu arched harp. This harp is meant to be practically identical to the ancient Egyptian Shoulder Harp used in older times. The artist desired to produce songs that attempted to recreate the lost sound of the archaic arched harp from Egypt hence the album name “The Ancient Egyptian Harp”. The song begins with cords being strummed on the harp in a mystical almost mysterious way. The rhythm is slow, and the beats almost feel inconstant. Throughout the song, the melody stays pretty repetitive with not many drastic changes other than the intensity rising as the piece draws closer to the end. The title of the piece calls the listeners to realize the tribute being paid to the Egyptian god Osiris god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead. I choose this example because of my sisters love for the Egyptian culture and their gods.
