The piece Through Heavens Eyes composed by Hans Zimmer and performed by Brian Stokes Mitchell is a part of the award-winning soundtrack from the animated movie Prince of Egypt, which tells the story of the biblical figure, Moses’, life and accomplishments throughout his faith journey. This song in particular is sung by Moses’ father-in-law who encourages him to view every struggle and accomplishment as a valued blessing and opportunity for growth. I not only chose this piece because it was very impactful on my life growing up, but also because it sounds similar musically to the example from Egypt from our coursework. The utilization of many instruments, including drums, tambourine, flute, and violin, as well as the upbeat, driving melody allow only for the image of lively dancers to come to mind. Furthermore, this movie was placed in Egypt, thus the title, and so the music was very intentionally inspired by Egyptian musical form, technique, and sound.
