The song I chose is called Resham Firiri. This is a traditional Nepali folk song composed by Buddhi Pariyar in 1969. The song originally was broadcast to the Nepalese radio and later became such a great hit that it is now apparently one of the most widely known and performed songs in Nepal. The song’s title, “Resham Firiri,” refers to the soft rustling sound of silk (Resham) fabric as it flutters in the wind (Firiri). The main instrument it is played with is called the Sarangi, which is a bowed string instrument that adds a calming quality to the music. Other instruments that can be heard include the madal, a traditional Nepali drum with two heads, and the bansuri, a bamboo flute. This example stood out to me not only because of the soft and catchy tune but also the location, I love hearing and looking at the high mountains of Nepal as I am a Geology major and love mountains.
