The song Kakadu – Music Mosaic Remastered by Didjworks, which was founded by Australian Indie artist Simon 7, was from the first album released upon Simon 7s’ rediscovery of the didjeridu after returning to Australia from America for the first time in 10 years. On my first listen, though I could easily pick out the distinct sound of the didjeridu, I couldn’t really place what other genres or cultures influenced the unique sound. And after some research, it was clear that that was the point of the song; its composition was influenced by a variety of different cultures Simon 7 and his band members experienced. There are many distinct and unique sounds, and yet, they are able to blend harmoniously into one piece of art, much like a mosaic. This song speaks to Didjworks’ vision of a world that values and welcomes all cultures and lifestyles. However, what originally drew me to this song was the collaboration of the didjeridu with voice in a way that felt familiar. Though the role of the instrument as a steady drone in the song is similar to the traditional example we listened to in class, when paired with voices of similar tone quality they were almost indistinguishable from one another. It was very interesting to hear the two interact and compliment one another.
