When searching for music, I was browsing a wide selection of just Southeast Asian albums, not specific to any country or culture. I was interested in finding out a bit more on the music and traditions of Thailand.

Though Thailand was never colonized by Western powers, pop music and other forms of European and American music have become extremely influential. The two most popular styles of traditional Thai music are luk thung and mor lam. The rapid-fire, rhythmic vocals and a funk feel to the percussion. The lead singer, also called a mor lam, is most often accompanied by the khaen, also known as khene.

Whether sung in Sanskrit or in Vietnamese, or played on renêt or modern violin, music in Southeast Asia is dominated by a well-integrated, highly cultivated style which is characteristic of the whole area. It captures the influence of the Western musical tradition on the music of this region.
