Burma:Shan Song – YouTube

The song I chose is Burma: Shan Song that comes from Myanmar. It doesn’t show who created the song, but it states the song was compiled by Harold Courlander. I found the recording on Google when searching for Southeast Asia songs and it took a lot of searching to find one I really enjoyed. The purpose of the song in the words of Google states “the song lyrics are a form of self representation.”

In the beginning, there is a kazoo like instrument (but with more chords) being played. The tempo is not very strict and there is no distinct beat to beat rhythm going on. There is a drum trying to keep a steady tempo for the kazoo instrument. At :35 seconds, there is a singular male voice singing very monotone. When he sings, the instruments stop and this goes on until 2:35 seconds. Then the instruments start up again and the song ends at 3:04.

This song is more straightforward than my previous two songs, which is the primary reason why I chose it. I like the diversity of my song choices. I love the first instrument being played and I hope to be able to identify it when we learn more about instruments in Asia.
