The song I chose was ‘Tilak’ by Bombay Bandook which was released as a single in 2017. “Tilak” is inspired by “Tilak Kamod”, a classic Hindustani Raga from North India. The song is about celebrating all forms of love, specifically “all the fathers playing a double role [on] Mother’s Day”, which they note in their music video for “Tilak”. Bombay Bandook is from Mumbai, India and describes their music as “Indian fusion” and “alternative-indie Hindustani” on their Bandcamp page.
I chose to cover “Tilak” after finding an article from Rolling Stone India “8 Fusion Artists You Need to Add to Your Playlists” in which the author specifically recommends this song. I really enjoyed this song because the multiple guitars reminded me of popular indie music in America. The singer, Sannidh Shah, has a very melodic voice and the tabla, played by Samay Lalwani, creates a firm beat for this slower, steady song.
