I selected this piece based on the fact that I wanted to find something from the Hawaiian culture. I simply looked up some of the top artists to come through Hawaii’s musical history and Kimie Miner came up as a primary rising artist. So I took to Spotify to listen to some of her albums. The song I choose came from her 2015 album entitled her name; Kimi Miner. Not only is Miner a Grammy Award nominated producer she is a musician of Native Hawaiian and Portuguese descent which has heavily influence her musical style. One thing I love about her music is she evokes the Hawaiian concept of Piko: the “naval” or “center” which represents a home base to which one can always return. Coming from Hawaiian culture she offers people to recognize their roots and who they are. I choose this example because of its upbeat tempo, and jazz like influence. Even though the piece is very modernized it still contributes to the Hawaiian culture through periodical drum solos. Overall I like her style of being able to mix together Hawaiian, jazz, reggae, and R & B.
