I chose this recording because I recently had the opportunity to attend a masterclass with Serge Kasimoff, who was giving a lecture on techniques for writing this exact style of music, and used this as one of the examples. It was a fascinating masterclass, and I’m excited to put what I learned to use in the future. The band is made up of Serge (the pianist and composer for the band), two trumpets, two trombones, a baritone saxophone, three vocalists, congas, timbales, cowbell, and a bassist. This is the typical group for the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.
