The song I have selected for this unit is Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen. Personally, when I think of America, I immediately think of this song. Bruce Springsteen is an iconic American singer and songwriter. My dad introduced me to some of Bruce’s music and I think that it is a classic example of the type of music that an American dad, like mine, enjoys listening to. This song is empowering and uplifting and talks about how some people are truly not made to sit in one place for their entire lives, and how we are, as the title suggests, “born to run”. At the beginning, the song speaks about the idea of the “American dream” and how people try to chase this idea but might never be able to really grasp it. As for the instrumental elements, there is the classic, guitar, drums, etc. but there is also a portion of the song where the saxophone is the main voice that can be heard while the other instruments are in the background, which I like because it is unique and it helps to fuel that “building” sense of the song and reinforce the idea that we are anticipating the American dream and chasing our desires.
