This song, while not ‘traditional,’ is a Japanese composition that holds a unique element I feel. Im a Pokemon enthusiast, and the region from second generation interested me because some music feels like it was meant to have a ‘asian’ feel. When you listen to this piece, you’ll immediately hear a strummed instrument that carries the melody and contributes to the ‘asian’ feel of the piece. That feel comes from the instruments used, but while this piece is Japanese composed, research reveals that the stringed instrument is a pipa. The pipa is classified as a Chinese instrument, yet its eliciting a general ‘asian’ feel to many that would just assume its Japanese in nature. Its true that the composition is meant to imply that feeling, but I think its truly interesting because the piece is used in a town meant to feel like it has a lot of traditional and cultural importance with its towers and spiritualists inhabiting the ghost type gym in the town. Overall I think its a unique piece that combines two different East Asian cultures for music within a children’s game of all things.
