Kutumba “Arbajo” – YouTube

I started my research to find this song by looking at a map of South Asia. As I was looking at all the countries, I realized I have not heard of much information about Nepal so I began researching customs and music originating from Nepal. Bands such as Sukarma, Sudha, Sampada, and trikaal showed up. I chose a song sung by the band Kutumba called “Arbajo”. This had no lyrics, but really caught my attention. There is a ton of information about the music of Nepal on this website: Music of Nepal: The Traditional Nepalese Music and Influences (holidify.com)

The song starts at 7 seconds, with the use of a Madal, with a sarangi and a tungna following in at 11 seconds. It is a repeated melody with no vocals. There are no drastic dynamics, as the song is primarily forte. Most of the pitches played are within an octave range for the first minute, and then branches out into a two octave range. To me, the music has a medieval/viking feeling to it. The tempo has room to be expressive, but generally stays around the 64 bpm, adagio speed.
