The song I have chosen for chapter 10 on Sub-Saharan Africa is Homeless, performed by Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a group from South Africa and therefore embodies many of the characteristics from the music we have listened to in this chapter. The performance of this particular song included many “lush” harmonies similar to those of the Mbube Vocal Choir example that we examined in class. Paul Simon is mainly only accompanying the other performers during this performance, and giving the main focus and light to the group so that they may portray this music from their culture in the way that they wish to. The song sounds very pleasant on a surface level but the lyrics are not in line with that pleasant and relaxing nature. The structure of the song also somewhat follows a call and response cycle between the main voice and the group, but there is also some overlap throughout, which creates the previously explained harmonies.
