Gandhi Bilel Djuna, better known by his stage name Maître Gims, is a Congolese-French rapper, singer, and songwriter. He has had a few diffferent albums that have reached very high rankings on the charts in many different countries. Throughout his career, he has worked with multiple other famous singers, such as Sia, Pitbull, Sting, and Stromae, another famous french-speaking singer.

I chose the song “Est-ce que tu m’aimes?” because it is a song that I heard a lot growing up. My sister liked to listen to French music as she took French classes in middle school and high school, so it is a song that I heard on an almost daily basis, but I had no idea that the singer, Maître Gims, was originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I also chose this song because of the translation of the lyrics. I think that it is interesting storyline of how much the male character loved a woman, he was ready to do anything to be with her, but she changed drastically so he did not know if he loved her anymore. The style of music is also different than any of the music from Sub-Saharan Africa that we listened to in class, so it was interesting to recognize another style of music from the region.
