The song that I have chosen for this chapter is called Chorakae Yao (Siam). This is traditional folk music from Thailand. It is performed by a Piphat group, which is a type of ensemble that is made up of wind and percussion instruments (aerophones and membranophones). A Piphat group is typically used to perform “high-class” compositions from the realm of classical Thai music. In this recording, all of the instruments are playing at the same time, and they are conversational with the voice, so when singing is occurring, the instruments are calmer, but when the singing/chanting is absent, the instruments are very prominent and maintain an upbeat tempo. The instruments speed up toward the end of the song on their last cycle and have an abrupt ending where they all finish playing in sync.
