“Tunak Tunak Tun” was released by Indian singer/songwriter Daler Mehndi in 1998. Mehndi played a major role in popularizing the traditional Indian musical genre of Bhangra, as well as popularizing Indian pop music. Previous to his work, Indian pop music was found mainly in Bollywood, but he created an avenue for it to be created, performed, and consumed independent of Bollywood.
“Tunak Tunak Tun” itself is unique in the fact that it is a modern remix of a traditional Indian song, and is performed in a very modern way. It draws on both traditional aspects of Indian music, as well as on contemporary aspects as well.
I specifically chose this song because it is a song that my friends and I used to enjoy, but we never really looked into it enough to learn about its meaning and history. This song immediately came to my mind when we began Chapter Five, as I thought it would be enlightening to finally learn more about it.
