(1) Maldivian Traditional Bodu Beru dance – Bing video

This famous music’s other name, Boduberu, translates to “Big Drums” (Bodu Beru). Dancers perform dance rooted in island traditions in honor of Bodu Beru. The dance begins with a slow beat whose tempo picks up as the dancers react, building to a crescendo of wired frenzied movements inspired by the unbridled pulse of the beats. When the tempo reached its peak, the dancers bristled in a frenzied gyration of motion. Songs focus on a variety of topics including romance, satire, and love of nation. Bodu Beru originated in Maldivian tribal customs and links the nation to its earlier traditions; however, the music also is a celebration of the Maldives today, reflecting contemporary state of its culture and celebrating a variety of occasions such the Muslim Eid. Boduberu is performed by about 20 people, including three drummers and a lead singer. They are accompanied by a small bell, a set of drums also known as a bodu beru, and an onugandu, a small piece of bamboo with horizontal grooves, from which raspy sounds are produced by scraping.
