“Kal Ho Naa Ho” is the title track from an award-winning Hindi language romantic comedy that was released in 2003. The story of the film revolves around a woman who’s family has come on very difficult times after her father’s death. Her family business is not doing well and her relationship with her mother is also difficult, since she does not want to accept the young girl that her daughter adopted as part of the family.

The performer of this song, Sonu Nigam, is an extremely successful Indian singer, musical director, and actor. He has been singing since the age of four, when he would later help his dad at events such as weddings that they would perform at, and eventually at age 19 he started his career in Bollywood. In his more recent work, he has worked with other famous artists, such as DJ Aviccii, Britney Spears, and Jermaine Jackson, brother of Michael Jackson, in collaboration for different songs.

I chose this example because I think it is interesting how there is use of western musical traditions, such as the style of pop, in conjunction with instrumentation and language of the area in which this music was created. It is something that is easily relatable to me as well since I love watching different movies, especially romantic comedies, so I could kind of understand what was happening in the music video even though I could not understand the words of the music.
