Haloa Olohega is the song I selected because it immediately caught my attention when first listening. I found this song on the bottom of a youtube playlist someone made from the South Pacific Islands. It starts with a chordophone, bass, and maracas, creating a beat to dance. Then the two singers harmonize throughout the song with clear vocals you can sing along. The title of this song translates to “holoa praise”, which refers to an island in the Tokelau Islands. This island is known today as Swains Island, which was taken from these people singing the song by America in 1925. I believe they created this song to talk about the loss of their island. They sang about America being a thief, and someone named Eli helped America take over. When I translated the lyrics, it was a sad song, but just listening to the music by itself sounds happy.
