For my final song share, I chose one of my favorite musicians, Lizzo. As a child, Lizzo moved around quite a bit with her sister and her parents. She went to the University of Houston where she graduated with a degree in Classical Flute Performance. When she was 21 her father passed away and not long after Lizzo found herself living in her car while trying to make it in the music industry. She had a few popular songs but the one that put her on the map was “Truth Hurts”. In the few years that Lizzo has been famous, she has done so much for our current society. The body positivity movement was already underway, however, it was Lizzo that became the driving force of this movement. Many of her songs have lyrics validating the body sizes of both men and women. Almost daily is she either spreading this positivity on her social media platforms or in interviews. She said that her calling is to encourage body positivity and self-love, she believes that to save the world we must first save and accept ourselves. She is also a strong activist for LGBTQIA+ rights, women’s rights, and the rights of all races. These are topics she frequently talks about as well. I find Lizzo extremely inspiring because she never backs down from what she believes in and has taught millions of people around the world to love themselves.
The song I chose is “Coconut Oil”. Lizzo is a musician who likes to use multiple different genres in her music and this song shows it perfectly. The song starts with an electric organ you would hear in Gospel music. Lizzo then comes in playing the flute, and even though it is a contemporary sound she is still using a classical playing technique. Then an electric beat you would hear in hip-hop is added to the song. Not long after that Lizzo begins the song in a mixture of rapping and singing. Like most American songs, it follows the format of verse, bridge, and chorus, repeated twice. Near the end of the song, there is an instrumental break where an electric guitar comes in, which is a common instrument to hear in this type of American music. Once the song ends the recording keeps going and you can hear gospel music in the background.
