For my research project I am looking at Irish folk music and how it influenced society and politics. One cannot focus on Irish music without mentioning The Dubliners. The Dubliners are a band that existed from 1962-2012 and were greatly popular in the 70s and 80s. They can often be compared to as “The Beatles of Ireland.” In this song you can hear many aspects of traditional Irish folk music dating back for ages, but you can also hear how the Dubliners made the song more appropriate for the time with lyrics and tone. The idea of the song having a simple, repeating melody is present in this piece; however, the lyrics and energy keep the song interesting and fun. This song has a very confident and showstopping character that the singer conveys easily to the listener. The Dubliners capture the pure essence of the creation of Irish Folk music and how it can be used to celebrate, boast, dance or anything the listener wishes.
