For this song share, I wanted to see if I could push the boundaries of what we would traditionally call music and by providing a rather contemporary work from Iran. I began by searching for music from Iran that fell under the electronic genre on Smithsonian Folkways. I soon found that my options were limited but very captivating. I found the artist known as Dariush Dolat-Shahi. He is an Iranian-American who took traditional instruments such as the Tar and Sehtar with sounds recorded from nature. This artist digitally mixed them to create something, I can honestly say, I have never heard before. According to my research he wanted to “attain the balance between electronic abstraction and traditional spiritualism”. I was in awe of how the sounds of nature supported the traditional instruments and were used rhythmically throughout the piece.
