By Michio Miyagi, Spring Sea is an instrumental piece from Japan written for the koto and ryuteki, performed by Liu Fang and Yoshio Kurahachi in a concert in the Netherlands. Classic to this area, the piece does not use western chord progressions, but rather ebbs and flows, almost like meditation music. It starts off slow, not as rhythmic and seems improvised. It picks up when the koto starts to speed up, acting as the accompaniment as the ryuteki plays the melody. There are some bits where each instrument plays solo, but they play together for the majority of the piece. I would describe this song’s mood as melancholy, peaceful and meditative, but at parts it is also invigorating and life-giving. This song made me feel balanced, and I very much enjoyed listening and watching at the same time.
